One important aspect of Massey's comprehensive safety program is the company's highly-trained, motivated and experienced rescue teams. These elite teams are familiar with all aspects of mining – and safety and rescue.
Massey's five mine rescue teams have a number of specialized resources for their operations, including mine rescue vans, trailers and other transportation; fire fighting equipment, such as nozzles, lances, foam machines and specialized clothing; and equipment, such as freezers and air compressors.
Consistent training and practice as well as regional and national competitions keep mine rescue teams sharp and are central to each team's preparation. Over the years, Massey's volunteer rescue teams have earned a number of recognitions and awards.
During the 2007 National Mine Rescue Contest, Jeremy McClung, part of Massey's Southern West Virginia Mine Rescue Team won the bench contest. Benchmen must test emergency equipment in short order for operational effectiveness. The Mine Rescue Contest provided each benchman with a self-contained breathing apparatus with several deficiencies, and tested each contestant’s ability to diagnose and correct those deficiencies with speed and accuracy. Jeremy's achievement at the 2007 national competition and demonstrated Massey's commitment to safety and the goal of exceeding safety standards and requirements.
