To fully serve our growing markets now and to sustain our opportunities in the future, Massey Energy typically seeks to acquire new reserves faster than existing reserves are depleted. Over the past 20 years, we have increased our reserve holdings by an average of 5.6% per year to the point that we now control 2.3 billion tons of quality coal reserves. This represents approximately 37% of the total remaining coal reserves in Central Appalachia and provides Massey with a significant competitive advantage. Furthermore, if the trends of the past 20 years continue for the next 10 years, Massey will control an estimated 67% of all coal reserves in Central Appalachia by 2017.
