Christmas Extravaganza
Christmas Extravaganza A holiday tradition that has been especially popular and successful is the annual Christmas Extravaganza, which has delivered tens of thousands of gifts to underprivileged children in Central Appalachia. Staffed by nearly 200 Massey members and hosted in different locations throughout our region, the Christmas Extravaganza benefits nearly 3000 children annually. Families receive a turkey for their holiday meal, while the children receive gifts, fruit and candy.

Madison and Danville Volunteer Fire Departments
Massey Energy also supports local fire fighters as part of our broader commitment to safety. In 2007 Massey donated generously to the Madison and Danville Volunteer Fire Departments in West Virginia.

University of Kentucky
Last year Massey Energy announced a donation of more than $300,000 to the University of Kentucky (UK). UK operates one of the best mining education programs in the country. Over the next five years we will provide $25,000 annually for enhancements to the UK Department of Mining Engineering’s laboratory facilities, $8,000 annually in tuition assistance to four UK engineering students, in addition to $5,000 annually to support UK’s Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration student chapter.

In October 2007, Massey Energy was named a John Bryan Bowman Fellow in recognition of the Company’s generous support of UK.

Massey Invitational Basketball Tournament
Basketball Tournament Massey Energy is the proud corporate sponsor of the Massey Energy Invitational Basketball Tournament held each December at the Williamson Field House in Williamson, West Virginia. The event is always a popular gathering for local basketball enthusiasts as the tournament almost always includes heated rivalries. In 2008, the participating teams were Buch, Belfry, Matewan, Tolsia, Tug Valley, and Williamson high schools.

The tournament champions are recognized, as well as the tournament runner-up, best cheering section, and the school that displays the most school spirit. Financial awards are given for participation and placement in the tournament. Often, the schools utilize these awards to support academic and sporting programs.

Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl
Football Massey Energy is also proud to sponsor the annual Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl. The bowl is a football tradition in the Tug Valley and signals the start of the high school football season. The game pits last year’s graduating seniors from West Virginia against their counterparts from Kentucky.

The game is a much-anticipated opportunity for the communities to gather and enjoy a favorite pastime in Central Appalachia – high school football. Matewan High School’s Tiger Stadium plays host to the annual event, and the stadium is always filled to capacity with avid fans from throughout the Tug Valley.

In addition to the fun and excitement for the participants and the surrounding community, the Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl provides funding for college scholarships and improvements to local school athletic facilities.
