The Nicholas Energy complex includes a large surface mine, a highwall miner and a preparation plant. Coal from the highwall miner, and the portion of surface mined coal requiring processing is transported to the preparation plant via overland conveyor system. The plant has a processing capacity of 1200 tons per hour. All coal shipments are loaded into rail cars for delivery via the Norfolk Southern railway in unit trains of up to 140 railcars.
