1916 A.T. Massey begins to sell coal under the Massey family name.  
1920 A.T. Massey Coal Company, Inc. (ATM), is incorporated in Richmond, Virginia with A.T. Massey as its first President.
1945 ATM acquires its first mining operation.
1945 Evan Massey becomes President of ATM.
1954 Omar Mining Company ("Old Omar") is established in Logan County, WV.
1962 William E. Massey becomes President of ATM.
1965 Peerless Eagle Coal Co. is acquired.
1969 Omar Mining Company ("New Omar") begins producing in Boone County, WV.
1969 Martin County Coal Corporation is established.
1972 E. Morgan Massey becomes Chief Executive of ATM.
1974 ATM is acquired by St. Joe Minerals.
1974 Rawl Sales & Processing Co. is acquired.
1976 Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company is acquired.
1978 Massey Coal Services, Inc. is established.
1978 Elk Run Coal Company, Inc. is established.
1980 Royal Dutch Shell and St. Joe Minerals form Massey Coal Partnership.
1981 Fluor Corporation acquires St. Joe Minerals.
1984 Sidney Coal Company, Inc. is established.
1987 Massey Coal Partnership is reorganized. ATM becomes a wholly-owned coal mining subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
1989 Vantage Mining property is acquired from Pittston.
1991 Big Creek properties are acquired from Island Creek.
1991 Long Fork Coal Company is established.
1992 Don Blankenship becomes Chairman and CEO of ATM.
1992 New Ridge Mining property is acquired from United Coal.
1992 Boone County properties are acquired from Bethlehem.
1993 Marfork Coal Company, Inc. is established.
1993 Stirrat Coal property is purchased from W-P Coal.
1994 Performance and Goals properties acquired from Peabody.
1996 Green Valley property is acquired from Lady H Coal.
1996 Eagle Energy property is acquired from Bethlehem.
1997 United Coal Company is acquired.
1997 New Market low volatile reserves are acquired from National Steel.
1997 Alex Energy and Power Mountain Coal Company property is acquired from Bethlehem.
1997 Low volatile reserves are acquired from Mountain Laurel Resources Company.
1998 Bandmill property is purchased from Pittston.
1998 Delbarton Mining property is acquired from Northland Resources.
1998 Holden and Clearfork reserves acquired from Consol.
1999 Delbarton Mining property is acquired from Bunn & Robertson.
2000 ATM separates from Fluor Corporation and becomes publicly traded as Massey Energy.
2001 Massey announces that it will design, construct, own and operate a new coal handling facility for Eastman Chemical's plant in Kingsport, TN.
2001 Massey announces sale of a majority interest in Appalachian Synfuel.
2001 Massey announces change from fiscal (10/31) year end to calendar (12/31) year end.
2002 Massey announces sale of remaining interest in Appalachian Synfuel.
2002 Assets of Pittston Coal Company's Holston mining operations are purchased by Massey.
2003 Massey purchases approximately 30 million tons of surface reserves controlled by Horizon Natural Resources Company near Chelyan, West Virginia.
2004 Massey announces joint venture with Penn Virginia Resource Partners to operate coal handling facilities.
2005 Massey announces the purchase of selected assets associated with two Horizon subsidiaries, Starfire and Cannelton.
